About Stockholm Centre

Stockholm is the second largest city of Sweden and the capital of the country. Not only is it the most populous city in Sweden, it's home to about 22% of the Swedish population and the most populous urban area in all of Scandinavia. Stockholm, located on the south-central east coast of Sweden, is made up of 14 islands connected by over 50 on the mouth of Lake Mälaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea as it passes the Stockholm Archipelago with 24,000 islands and islets.

The city's architecture is interesting, with modern buildings made up of lots of brass and steel, fairytale-like towers, a charming and historical Old Town, and lots of green and open spaces. A major part of the Health and Wellness movement in architecture, 30% of Stockholm is made up of waterways, and another 30% of the city is made up of parks, making for one of the healthiest cities in Europe.

Stockholm has been a major national center in Sweden since it's founding in the 1250s, and is arguably the country's most important city, most likely due to its strategic location, between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. Its long history means that it contains architecture from all ages and styles since the 15th century. It was untouched by the destruction of the World Wars like the rest of Sweden, but hundreds of old buildings were demolished between 1955 and 1975, as part of a modernization movement that swept Europe at the time. Much of the architecture that replaced it is well built and has preserved the city's traditions.

Of course, the most famous aspect of Stockholm is a result of its location in the northernmost part of Europe--the long 18-hour days in the summer months, and the short daylight hours in the winter (about six hours).
